Siberian Ginseng

Ci Wu Jia or Wuchaseng

Eleutherococcus Senticosus

Siberian Ginseng is a popular medicinal plant that grows abundantly in parts of the Russian Far East, China, Japan, and Korea. Although Siberian Ginseng possesses similar effects as other Ginsengs (American, Korean, Chinese), it is generally milder in action. Its main effects include strengthening the immune system, accelerating the functions of the brain, calming the spirit, tranquilizing the mind, strengthen vital energy, decreasing fatigue among many other actions. It is very affective as a sleep aid, as an anti-depressant, sedative, as well as helping the body and mind cope with stress and fatigue. Its ability to help the body withstand many physical, mental, and chemical distresses makes it a very important Chinese herb in today's world.

In clinical studies, Siberian Ginseng appears to possess adaptogenic  effects. This means it is innocuous and cause minimal disorder in the physiological functions of an organism, and it increases resistance to adverse influences by a wide range of physical, chemical, and biochemical factors.

Siberian Ginseng extract has been administered to more than 2,100 healthy human subjects in clinical trials for purpose of evaluating its adaptogenic effects. These studies indicated that Siberian ginseng increased the ability of humans to withstand the many adverse physical conditions such as heat, noise, workload increase, exercise, and decompression. It also increased mental alertness and improved the quality of work produced under stressful conditions as well as athletic performance.

One of the more popular uses of Siberian ginseng is in the treatment of fatigue, including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Central to this disorder is a disturbed immune system. Siberian ginseng appears to address the fatigue, decreased sense of well-being, and impaired immune function in people with CFS.

It has a greater stimulating effect than Ginseng; but it can also calm the patient and reduce anxiety. It is useful in protecting the body from damage due to radiation and it decreases inflammation. It also normalizes blood pressure. If the blood pressure is too high, it will lower the blood pressure, if it is too low, it will raise the blood pressure.

Research in China suggested that this herb, Siberian Ginseng, has the effect of increasing endocrine function (ovaries, testes, adrenal glands). It will increase insulin, and decrease blood sugar if it is excessively high. It has an anti-diuretic property and will help prevent the patient from producing excess urine.

Research in China has also suggested that this herb can be helpful in treating cancer. In addition, this herb prevented the spread of the sarcoma to other parts of the body. In China, the use of this herb with cancer patients is preferable to the use of Ginseng.
